A rant, chapter & verse
God Kills/Mauls/Tears 42 Children

This is a good but short one that shows very clearly the savage nature of God. The passage is in 2 Kings 2:23-24. The story is about the sidekick of the prophet Elijah, one named Elisha. After Elijah was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind (!) the prophet Elisha was on his way to Bethel when the following happened:

"23 And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. 24 And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them." (2 Kings 2:23-24)

I hardly need to add any commentary to this story to show the complete savage, vindictive, criminal, awful nature that God shows through this act. Imagine if at a circus an animal trainer was mocked by some little children for being bald and that trainer unleashed his trained bears upon the children and "tore" 42 of them! This would make national headlines and the animal trainer would be sent to jail forever, if not killed.

How then, can this act be justified for a supposedly good God? It can not. It is an evil act of the worst sort and any being which would do such an act is evil. Why worship such a being?

Of course, I believe that no such being exists. How much worse it would be for the universe if I am wrong and a God that causes bears to maul 42 children for mocking a bald man does exist! Remember, if the bible is the true word of God, then Jesus ordered the bears to maul the 42 children. Some values.

I haven't heard the Elisha and the bear story from you for a bit. What prompted this particular retelling?
